Whether it was guiding Bilbo or Frodo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey then White was a very busy wizard. In the Lord of the Rings mythology, Gandalf was usually around to point the protagonists of the stories in the right direction. He was part of the group led by Thorin to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. As well as the Fellowship of the Ring, tasked with destroying the One Ring.
So why are we talking about Gandalf in a Star Wars piece? Well to be fair, anytime is a good time to talk Gandalf. But in this case is because of the comparison made by Dave Filoni, the writer and director for last week’s episode of The Mandalorian titled, The Jedi. You know the one that Ahsoka Tano made her debut played by Rosario Dawson? He was also in charge of the development of Ahsoka in the animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels.
During a conversation, he had with Vanity Fair Filoni talked about Ahsoka and where we find her now. Years after watching her grow up in Clone Wars and Rebels. This is where the Gandalf comparison comes in.
“She is, for lack of a term, a master, because she’s largely an independent at this point. I play her much more as a knowledgeable knight. A wandering samurai character is what she really is at this point. I’ve always made comparisons to her heading toward the Gandalf stage, where she is the one that has the knowledge of the world and can help others through it. I think she’s reached that point.” Said Filoni.

He goes on to talk about the journey that he has taken her on throughout the animated series and now to this live-action version. “We saw her basically hit the scene as a Padawan: young, and naïve, and brash, and aggressive. Then, in Rebels, she’s more of a traditional knight, trying to figure out how to fight a war. There’s a lot of hesitation around what she wants to be and who she can be and how her life’s been guided. I think that now I’ve taken that a step further. When you see this version of the character, she’s world-weary from everything that she’s experienced and lived through. She’s seen so much happen in her time.”
If you’ve watched the two animated series, you know that Ahsoka has been through a lot. So there is no doubt about the years of experience that she has. As we saw in last week’s episode of The Mandalorian, she has no issue lending a hand when needed. It would be interesting to see her in Gandalf’s role, taking others under her wing that needs her help. Especially as she carries knowledge and abilities that are becoming rarer and rarer in this time period. It will be exciting to see what kind of adventures we see her in.
