The filmmakers, Alex Rivest, PhD and Danny O’Malley brings us the documentary, Canary. A passionate story about the prestigious glaciologist, Dr.Lonnie Thompson, PhD the scientist to bring awareness of global warming happening due to the harm of fossil fuels.
The Synopsis
Witness the extraordinary life of Dr. Lonnie Thompson, an explorer who went where no scientist had gone before and transformed our idea of what is possible. Daring to seek Earth’s history contained in glaciers atop the tallest mountains in the world, Lonnie found himself on the frontlines of climate change—his life’s work evolving into a salvage mission to recover these priceless historical records before they disappear forever.
Danny O’Malley is known for his work as a co-executive producer and director for the Netflix series, Chef’s Table. O’Malley has also navigated the music while filming bands like The Rentals, Tegan and Sara, The Decemberists, Kraftwerk among others. His Grammy nomination came for the States from Tegan and Sara’s Get Along for Best Long Form Video. Documentaries still seem to be of his high interest having worked to create several with other networks like Fox Sports One and NBC. In 2017 O’Malley and Alex Rivers, PhD won the Alfred P Sloan Development grant that assisted in making Canary.

The educator Alex Rivest is an educator that has received the Angu MacDonald Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in MIT. Riverst earned his PHd from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His work has been acknowledged by reputable science journals like Science and Nature Neuroscience. As well as his science films that have reached over 70 million online viewers, including Time Square, museums and Das Rheingold.
I connected with the filmmakers of Canary, Alex Rivest, PhD and Danny O’Malley to talk about the various topics covered in the film. Including fossil fuels and global warming. As well as the title of the documentary and its relevance. They spoke fondly of Lonnie Thompson, PhD and shared what his take was after viewing his own story and much more!
Canary is now available in Los Angeles and New York. Opening nationwide on September 20, 2023.
