Anthony Russo On Pitching Tony Stark’s Endgame Arc To Robert Downey Jr. [SPOILERS]

Warning! This post contains big SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame, this is your usual heads up if you have not seen the movie yet.

I absolutely loved the arc of Tony Stark across both Infinity War and Endgame. When we start Infinity War, Tony seems almost ready to hang up the Iron Man suit and be a husband and hopefully a father, whilst the rest of the former Avengers deal with the next world crisis. Until that next world crisis came and hit him like a truck, and before he knows it, he is in a spaceship fighting an alien supervillain to rescue a wizard. Of course, things didn’t go too well for Tony or any of the other characters in Infinity War.

In Endgame however Tony gets to be the big hero and save everyone. He only has to pay the ultimate price for that future where his wife and daughter would live in a normal world, his life. Deciding to kill Tony Stark in this way was one of the best decisions made in this movie and it caps a great 10 years as the big star of the MCU for Robert Downey Jr., who of course, started it all with Iron Man.

Ever wonder what it must be like to go meet with RDJ and tell him his character is being killed in the next movie arc? Wonder no more, as Anthony Russo spoke about how they pitched this arc to RDJ when he spoke to THR recently.

“We did pitch Robert his arc, because he kicked off the entire MCU. The Tony Stark arc is the longest and perhaps fullest in the MCU. Once we decided we wanted this kind of ending for the character, we certainly wanted to make sure Robert was comfortable with it, just because of his enormous contribution to the MCU. We did pitch it out. We went over to meet with him and we pitched it out to him. A lot of the actors are not opinionated about what we do. They like the fact that we are sort of in control of these stories and we are driving where they should go and we have a vision for where they should go and they trust in that. I think Downey may have had mixed emotions about thinking about [where Tony Stark ends up in Endgame], but I think at the end of the day, he totally accepted it.”

I can imagine RDJ maybe hoping that his character could be kept alive in case there was ever an opportunity to come back after another decade for a little cameo here and there, but he has to be happy with the 10 year arc his character has had in these movies. Of course, with all the multiple timelines and potentially alternate dimensions that Marvel has going on, there are literally a thousand ways they could bring back Tony Stark if they ever needed to for some good story reason.

What did you think of Tony’s death, was it the right movie or are you just too sad to think about the future yet? Share your thoughts in the usual spot below.
