Having conquered the box office in 2019, Joe and Anthony Russo have bragging rights for the rest of their careers. They’re responsible for four of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the latter breaking records worldwide. Now, they’re ready to move on to other projects, and one of those projects may be tied to a very powerful couple.

Back in 2017, the Russos acquired the rights to novel Exit West, written by Mohsin Hamid, with the intention of a film adaptation. Months after that, former President Barack Obama placed that same book on his best books of the year list. Now, rumors are circulating that the Russo Brothers are teaming up with Barack and Michelle Obama on the potential film project. Sources say the Russos and Obamas will produce the film for Netlflix, with Riz Ahmed (HBO’s The Night Of) attached to star. Neither of the aforementioned parties has commented on the rumor.

Collider describes the novel’s synopsis below:

Exit West tackles the global refugee crisis and takes place in an unidentified country in the Middle East, where young Saeed and burqa-wearing Nadia flee their home after Saeed’s mother is killed by a stray bullet stemming from violent clashes between guerrillas and the local government. The couple joins other migrants traveling to safer havens via carefully guarded doors. Through one door, they wind up in a crowded camp on the Greek Island of Mykonos. Through another, they secure a private room in an abandoned London mansion populated mostly by displaced Nigerians. A third door takes them to California’s Marin County. In each location, their relationship is tested by their struggle to find food, adequate shelter and a sense of belonging among emigrant communities.

Yann Demange (White Boy Rick) is set to direct the adaptation, but attaching the Obamas as producers would definitely bring even more attention to the project. Fresh off their Oscar win for producing the documentary winner American Factory, producing a film with the filmmaking duo from the MCU would be an exciting next step. We’ll have to wait and see if the rumors are true.
