Avengers: Endgame Helmer Joe Russo Gives Update On Battle Of The Planets Adaptation

Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo have spent recent months cashing in that Marvel Studios capital they accrued. Following the release of the film, they were essentially given a license to do whatever the hell they wanted. Since then, they’ve produced projects like 21 Bridges and Extraction and directed the soon-to-be-released Cherry. Since then, all of their features have starred Marvel superheroes — so it’s great company to be in. But one project I’ve had my eye on from the get-go is Battle of the Planets.

Now, Battle of the Planets is a cartoon that is way before my time. It aired in the late-1970s and if it had reruns in the ‘80s and ’90s, I never saw them. But, as an anime nerd, a part of my education in Sentai teams (basically Power Rangers) brought Science Ninja Team Gatchaman into the conversation. And for those who don’t know, that’s the series Battle of the Planets was made from.

As such, I was intrigued when the Russos revealed that it was one of many projects on their slate. Furthermore, it was easily their highest-profile one. I love the more grounded content as much as the next person, but my heart lies in big flashy blockbusters. Nearly a year has passed since that San Diego Comic-Con reveal…so what’s the progress?

“We’re in what we call the development phase,” Joe Russo said. “The way we work, we do what we call IP Incubation, and it is a protracted process. We have to take something like Battle of the Planets, take it through a filter, find out what it is that we loved most about that show growing up, reinterpret it – because it is not going to be an exact adaptation of the series.”

So, what’s the story going to be about? Given that I know little about the actual plot about either version of Battle of the Planets, I was intrigued.

“It’s going to be our own story to tell surrounding a group of genetically altered kids who are involved in a space war.”

It’s vague, for sure. There isn’t a lot for us to sink our teeth into, but I do like it. Given the duo’s experience with superhero movies, there’s nothing here that I hate. Give these guys more license to deal in supers and space, and I think you have a recipe for another solid action series. I also like hearing their developmental approach here.

As we know, their take on the MCU isn’t necessarily reflective of the comics. Yes, there is a lot of love shown to the source material, but it’s not exactly a one-to-one deal there. It’s a perfect distillation of the source material. Rather than jam everything in, they try and find out what fans love most about a property and capitalize on that. In all honesty, I think a lot of filmmakers can learn from them on that.
