Avengers: Thanos Creator On Why The Films Avoided Death As A Character

When Thanos was first introduced into the MCU in The Avengers, director Joss Whedon heavily hinted that the man himself was obsessed with “death.” And if you were a comic fan, that made sense. Death was the character Thanos pined over in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline — so much so that he was willing to go to ridiculous lengths to please her. But that’s not the direction they ended up going.

While they did have that Death line, in the films, they shifted his motivation to be a more altruistic one. Instead of having him do things to impress death, he instead is hoping to bring balance back to the universe by killing off half of it. Speaking with IGN, Thanos creator Jim Starlin discussed how he felt about them making such a change:

“Well, they were very open to me about why they did that. Marvel is a little bit hesitant right now to introduce the abstract entities into the Marvel universe. Just because they’re not sure how the moviegoing population’s gonna take that. I think that’ll change once they get a couple more Doctor Strange movies out of the way.”

Interesting. I actually hadn’t realized that cold feet had been the real reason behind this change. To me, his actual convictions seemed like a much more relatable goal to me. Either way though, Starlin wasn’t upset:

“The alternate motivation they used was right out of Silver Surfer #34, so I had no complaints they were substituting my idea for another one of my ideas, so who am I to complain?”
