Ben Affleck And Matt Damon Reunite To Star And Pen Upcoming Ridley Scott Adaptation

It’s been well over twenty years since best friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck collaborated on Good Will Hunting, the screenplay that would win them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Since then, the two have gone on to become two of the biggest names in the film industry. Damon has gone on to be involved in both critically-acclaimed films and blockbuster movies, including RoundersSaving Private Ryan, the Ocean’s trilogy, four Jason Bourne films, The DepartedSyrianaThe Good ShepherdInvictusInterstellar, and The Martian. As for Affleck, after a few big hits and some very bad choices, he reinvented himself as a filmmaker—directing his brother Casey in Gone Baby Gone before working both behind and in froth of the camera in The Town and his Oscar-winner Argo. Affleck would go on to gain praise for his performance in Gone Girl and was viewed as one of the positive aspects of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

Now, the two are teaming up once again with iconic director Ridley Scott for the film The Last Duel, based on the novel by Eric Jager. According to Deadline‘s exclusive, Damon and Affleck have completed the script along with Nicole Holofcener (Can You Ever Forgive Me?Enough Said) and are waiting to hear when Disney, who acquired the project after their purchase of all Fox properties, sans to go forward with the production. Deadline describes the novel, The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France. as follows:

The main characters are the Norman knight Jean de Carrouges and the squire Jacques Le Gris. They were friends. One goes to war and returns to accuse Le Gris of raping his wife Margerite de Carrouges. No one will believe the woman, and the soldier appeals to the king of France to undo a decision handed down by Count Pierre d’Anencon, which favored Le Gris. The decision handed down is that the two men fight a duel to the death. The one left alive would be declared the winner as a sign of God’s will. And if Jean de Carrouges loses, his wife will be burned at the stake for punishment for her false accusation.
