Binge-worthy: Dirty Money On Netflix

There is the overused catchphrase “money makes the world go ’round.” While there is a second part to that quote uttered by Paul Van Der Merwe, it’s the first part everyone remembers. Most of humanity spends its entire existence chasing after it. We believe that with it comes pure happiness. So much so that in many cases, we don’t care where it comes from or how some use it. Enter Netflix’s Dirty Money.

Dirty Money focuses on the illegal and “dirty” ways money is used throughout the world. In its first season, the docuseries tackled the Volkswagen emissions scandal, the drug price hikes of Valiant Pharmaceuticals, the HSBC’s money laundering for cartels and Hezbollah, and the past actions of one Donald J. Trump. The latter focuses heavily on the numerous questionable deals and business ventures Mr. Trump embroiled himself in, as well as the not-so-successful projects he led. Surprisingly, Fisher Stevens directed this installment. Yes, the guy who starred in Short Circuit and Hackers.

Season 2 premiered on March 11th with another half dozen chapters of deep-digging into the underworld tactics fueled by money. Its very first episode, “The Wagon Wheel,” reveals the unethical practices Wells Fargo encouraged its employees to commit in order to drive up its stock. These tactics literally stole millions from unknowing customers and resulted in one of the biggest congressional investigations against a gigantic American bank.

Additionally, Dirty Money‘s second season investigates Jared Kushner and the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal. Moreover, it shines a light on the money laundering, sex trafficking, and environmental destruction tied to the gold mining industry.
