The Clone Wars Actor On Big Finale And Why This Is The Last Of George Lucas’ Star Wars

last of George Lucas' Star Wars

Is the final Season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars the last of George Lucas’ Star Wars? That’s what one The Clone Wars actor says, plus a tease for the finale of the show. Read on for more details.

Lucasfilm was sold when The Clone Wars showrunner Dave Filoni was prepping for the final season. The purchasing company Disney had to shut down this finale which would be shown on another network. Now that Disney+ is here, The Clone Wars has been resurrected and we move towards the climax of the final season.

With the final story arcs ready set to play across the coming weeks, Darth Maul voice actor Sam Witwer spoke to Io9. He teases a big finale for the popular animated Star Wars show.

“The finale, that script, was the best Clone Wars script that I ever read. I think Dave has done a really very, very cool thing. When I say script I don’t mean—when I’m talking about the finale, I’m talking about the last four episodes because it’s really meant to be seen as a movie. These Clone Wars arcs that go on for three to four episodes, they could also be cut together as movies and they work as one story, but this one really is meant to be seen in its entirety together, more so than anything else we’ve ever done. I’m very, very excited for the audience to see it, because it’s consequential, it changes the way you think about certain things in Star Wars,” he added, “changes the way you think about certain characters, and shows some really interesting core mythology stuff. I’m thrilled, and I’m shocked.”

Sounds intriguing. I watched The Clone Wars to begin with, but lost my way over time. As of today I officially have Disney+ though, so it’s time to catch up. I obviously know a lot of the end game details here, because I have seen Revenge of the Sith. I am not that familiar with the story of Ahsoka Tano though. With Ahsoka coming to live-action soon in The Mandalorian Season 2, I need to catch up with her story.

The Last Piece of George Lucas’ Star Wars

It is interesting to think back to when The Clone Wars was last on screens.  Star Wars creator George Lucas owned Lucasfilm prior to Disney’s purchase in 2012. Since Disney bought the franchise, I don’t think they’ve managed the property well. That is just my own personal opinion, but I feel like I’m far from alone with this stand. It’s interesting then, that The Clone Wars feels very much like a pre-Disney show. Witwer actually says this is the final piece of the George Lucas Star Wars jigsaw puzzle. So is this the last of George Lucas’ Star Wars?

“What may be my most favorite thing about this, what we’re doing is, Clone Wars is the last George Lucas-produced Star Wars. To be able to finish George’s story is tremendously meaningful to all of us, so that’s really the big deal right there. These are stories straight from George, and we get to execute upon them, and that’s kind of the end of the era.

You have to appreciate that this is a crazy maverick independent filmmaker, and only one of his Star Wars movies was a studio movie. The rest, past the very first Star Wars movie, these were independent films that he funded himself. And Clone Wars was an independent production by an independent film studio, just a crazy guy with crazy ideas issuing marching orders to people like Dave Filoni, and through Dave to me. And here we are doing this again, and it feels very familiar. I thought we had lost this, and now we get to finish it. It feels really, really great to finish the last George Lucas-produced Star Wars.”

The end of George Lucas will leave some fans clapping after the quality of that prequel trilogy. Yet, I don’t know, maybe Lucas could have been given a sort of back-office, godfather-like role? We will never know now I guess?
