Iconic filmmaker John Singleton was hospitalized last week after suffering a stroke. He is 51 years old.
Singleton’s family issued this statement over the weekend when news of the stroke circulated throughout the media:
“On Wednesday, April 17th, our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care. We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues.”
The director is best known for his film Boyz N The Hood, which remains one of the definitive films of the 1990s. His filmography includes Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Shaft, Baby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and Four Brothers. He has also directed episodes of Empire, The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, Rebel, Billions, and Snowfall.

Singleton’s Boyz N The Hood earned him two Oscar nominations–Best Director and Best Original Screenplay–at the Academy Awards in 1992. Singleton was the youngest filmmaker ever to be nominated in both categories. On his Instagram, Hip Hop legend and friend of Singleton’s, Snoop Dogg, posted a picture of the two with the caption “pray 4 my brother.”
