Charlie Cox Says Daredevil: Born Again Will Have Tonal Shifts

Another piece of casting news for this show as Daredevil: Born Again adds Genneya Walton to the cast.

In a  recent interview, Charlie Cox says Daredevil: Born Again will have tonal shifts across the 18 episode series. So what does this mean for the show, especially given Daredevil‘s mature rating which we don’t expect to carry into Born Again?

During D23 Cox spoke with Variety and discussed how dark the new series may be? Or not, as the case may be?

“I don’t know that it will be any more darker or any less dark,” Cox said of Daredevil: Born Again compared to the Netflix series. “What does dark mean? There will be a tonal shift I’m sure because we’re doing more episodes and we’re now on a different platform. I don’t know, I haven’t read anything yet.”

It sounds like Cox hasn’t read the scripts, so at the moment he’s probably going off what he was told in the pitch. I’m pretty sure the idea he was sold on, was that this would be more in line with the current MCU which he is now attached to.

Cox also says his appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, due to air this Thursday is a little more lighthearted.

“What was fun about being in She-Hulk for this one episode is… obviously the tone of this show is radically different, and in order for it to be appropriate for me to be in that show, I had to adapt a little bit my Matt Murdock so he was in a place in his life where he’s having fun,” Cox said to Variety. “Where life is good and he’s a bit cheeky and a bit flirty and it’s tonally slightly different. It was a bit of an experiment, but it was really enjoyable, and I really had a good time, and the chemistry I had with Tatiana was amazing. So, if they do lighten the tone a little bit, I’m not afraid of that.”

However don’t expect that lighthearted tone to continue into Daredevil: Born Again. Instead Cox said to expect some tonal changes throughout the course of the show.

“Not over the course of an entire season, not with this character,” Cox told Variety. “I don’t think that’s truthful enough to the source material for that to really work. But, there are plenty of Daredevil comics where there is levity, there is light-heartedness, there is fun, and I think with 18 episodes you have time to do a bit of both.”

Daredevil Was Cancelled Because Of Disney+ Confirms D'Onofrio

I think it’s interesting that Charlie Cox seems to be speaking diplomatically about this new take. I think he understands that Marvel hope not to alienate the fans of Daredevil. That’s if things are a bit lighter on Disney+? Equally, that being part of the family friendly MCU means there will have to be some adjustments. I do not for example expect to see Kingpin decapitate someone with a car door on Born Again.

Until Cox reads the scripts, who can say for sure other than the current writing team and producers? I loved Daredevil 1-3, and the dark brooding tone worked for me. So (She-Hulk aside) I probably don’t want Matt Murdock to be trading one liners and smiling all day at work if that makes sense?

Charlie Cox says Daredevil: Born Again will have tonal shifts across the 18 episode series, and seems to suggest to expect a slightly lighter tone at times. What do you think of Cox’s comments on Daredevil: Born Again? Let us know, as always, below.
