According to the latest Barside Buzz, Ryan Coogler is rumored to be in talks to direct Avengers: Secret Wars. Of course when it comes to the next two massive Avengers movies, we already know that Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) is directing The Kang Dynasty. However all we really know so far about Secret Wars is that it won’t be directed by the Russos. Slightly surprising to many fans given how keen the pair seemed to be involved in that project. Saying all that, Coogler is a big star after Black Panther and that star could grow if he can pull off Wakanda Forever, given the difficulties that sequel faced in losing the lead star to a tragic young death.
The rumor comes from a source I’ve not come across before. Therefore I can’t comment on their accuracy when it comes to leaks. The Weekly Planet Podcast said on their latest show they had heard Coogler was in talks to direct Secret Wars. I’ve never come across this podcast before. However several other outlets have been running this story and indicating this could be on the level. I’ll leave the judgments to you on that. However I will say that I have heard Coogler’s name mention previously on the grapevine without anyone really sticking their neck out. That could be wise, considering that being in talks is not the same as signing on the dotted line.

My guess would be that both Coogler and Marvel Studios would want to see the finished product of Wakanda Forever before confirming the deal. Coogler has other Marvel projects on thew way also. A Wakanda based Disney+ series is in development. Though, I believe Coogler is more of an exec producer than a showrunner on that one, if memory serves.
Right now we still don’t know what the connection is between The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars which come out close together. I’ll take a wild stab at some speculation. I think The Kang Dynasty will be about the Avengers facing and defeating Kang, finally. However due to this, for some reason it allows Doctor Doom (rumored to make MCU debut in Wakanda Forever‘s post credit scene) to set up the events of Secret Wars. I look forward to hearing more about Marvel’s two big event movies as the MCU progresses.
