Christopher Cantwell Taking Iron Man ‘Back To Basics’ This September

When it comes to Marvel comic books lately, it seems like it’s hard to find a jumping-on point to get going in their universe. There are times where I had a road map to know where to start so that I can enjoy these characters as much as I enjoy DC characters. Well, this September it looks like we will have a perfect jumping-on point for one of Marvel’s biggest heroes thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony Stark aka Iron Man.

Today Marvel Entertainment announced their new title, Iron Man #1. Set to hit comic book shelves on September 16th, 2020. It will feature the writing of Eisner-nominated Christopher Cantwell. The artwork will be handled by the talented CAFU and Frank D’Armata. The title will feature a brand new look for Iron Man that was designed by the legendary Alex Ross, who also did the cover page that is showcased below.

In an interview with Marvel that is also posted below, Cantwell talks about taking Tony “back to basics”. He will be putting down his high tech gadgets and his high profile image to get his “hands dirty as a superhero again”. In this series, along with deadly threats from the past, Tony will struggle with one of his biggest adversaries, his ego.

“He’s a man who thinks he’s a god and a god who wants to be a man. That to me boils down the conflict of the character. Tony’s ego has always been a major problem for him in his life,” Cantwell told Marvel.com Host Angélique Roché. “The book really starts with Tony taking a look at himself: ‘Who am I really? Who is Iron Man? I want to be a hero again, what does that mean?’”

This Iron Man title looks fantastic. CAFU has done some amazing work in the past via Valiant Entertainment. Now paring his artwork, Ross’ design, Cantwell’s writing, this books seems like a slamdunk. I am very curious to see what actual villains show up. Also I always enjoy watching Tony and those around him struggle with his giant ego. Lucky for us we have to wait just about a month for the release of Iron Man #1.
