Christopher Nolan’s Tenet Is A Cross-Genre Espionage Film

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hitting theaters this weekend, it’s easy to forget that there are some original ideas making their way to the big screen in the coming months. Of course, you have all the Oscar contenders hitting before the year’s end (though there isn’t much time ’til that ends as well), but as far as BIG movies, we have Tenet, which comes from the mind of Inception and Interstellar helmer Christopher Nolan.

A few months back, some lucky moviegoers got to see an initial teaser for Tenet (I was not one of them), but now we have some brand-new details about the movie itself.

“We’re jumping off from the point of view of an espionage film, but we’re going to a number of different places,” Nolan told EW. “We’re crossing a few different genres in a hopefully exciting and fresh way. [Producer] Emma [Thomas] and I have put together a lot of large-scale productions, but this is certainly the biggest in terms of international reach. We shot in seven countries, all over the place, with a massive cast and huge set pieces. There’s no question, it’s the most ambitious film we’ve made.”

This pleases me. In entertainment, one of the cardinal rules is you want your film to be easily categorized by audiences. It’s one of the reasons why cross-genre pieces are a hard sell, and the fact that Nolan is willing to go into weird places with this is a testament to how much studios trust him. You almost never have filmmakers allowed to essentially do original cross-genre projects with big budgets, so this is a huge deal.

Also, in case there was any doubt, John David Washington, who recently killed it in BlacKkKlansman, is the mains tar of this movie. If you want to check out images from the flick, CLICK HERE.
