Fans of Kevin Smith likely remember a short-lived animated version of Clerks. Way back in the year 2000, ABC aired two episodes of Clerks: The Animated Series before promptly canceling for various reasons. Since then, it’s pretty much quietly faded into obscurity, with most of its fans being made up on the Kevin Smith diehards.
Of course, at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, in Smith’s Hall H Panel, which I had the privilege to attend, there were plenty of diehards. At was in this setting that Smith revealed that we could see another take on the beloved animated series.
“There’s a chance it could happen this year,” Smith said, addressing the Hall H crowds. “I’m working on something that could actually open the door for that. So stand by. A lot of people who were creatively involved are interested to do it again. Dave Mandel, who I created the show with. Dave went on to run Veep for a while. So now he’s done with Veep. I dunno, maybe there’s a chance we could hook him back into this.”
Smith then relayed a story that involved Mandel flying across the country for a five-second cameo in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot wherein he reprises his cameo from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. If he was willing to go to those lengths for a joke almost no one got, perhaps there’s chance for more.
“Clerks cartoon could happen this year,” Smith continued. “And I don’t mean that in a, ‘We could fly,’ kinda way. There’s probably a chance that it could happen this year. So stay tuned.”
