Colin Farrell Shares New Info About The Penguin Spin-Off Series

HBO released a Max 2024 preview with new footage from The Penguin, House of the Dragon Season 2, True Detective: Night Country and much more.

Colin Farrell recently sat down with Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast to talk about his first Oscar nomination for The Banshees of Inisherin and also talk a little bit about The Penguin spin-off. The upcoming HBO Max show is set to start shooting at the end of this month and will continue to explore Oz and his rise to power. Matt Reeves who was the writer and director of The Batman is also responsible for making this show happen. Reeves has shared that a big reason this show even exists is how much fun actor Colin Farrell had played the part of Oz in The Batman. Colin was able to expand some more about how the show will interact with The Batman universe and how long it will be.

“It’s going to be an eight-part thing, around Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum created when Falcone was killed. Matt’s idea was to have the Peguin show begin about a week after the end of the Batman film. And if it works, if the trajectory is interesting, and the audience goes for it, and we do our jobs right, the second Penguin feature will pick up where the HBO show will end.

It seems that Reeves had a similar concept to what James Gunn is trying to do with the new DC Universe by creating movies, shows, and animation but having them all linked together. I think it is a really smart idea that Reeves is bringing this idea to HBO Max rather than a full-length feature film. Matt Reeves had this to say when asked by Fandom earlier this year what led to The Penguin series.

“The idea of getting to do the series and really sort of dive into the depths of who this character is and look at that moment where it’s kind of his Scarface moment. The moment where everyone’s underestimated him, he’s gonna reach for power in Gotham. Lauren LeFranc, who wrote it and who’s the showrunner, she’s so wonderful. She dug into the character. I kept showing her the movie as she was working on the script, before the movie was ever done.”

“So the idea of us getting to go back in and work with Colin is super exciting. He’s so incredible in The Banshees of Inisherin. He’s just an amazing actor. It’s amazing, because he’s so different [in Banshees]. But what he has beautifully, even as Penguin, as Oz, is, there is this level of vulnerability that he plays that is such a beautiful part of his soul and he always finds this way to project into the characters and I just think he’s really just very special. But more than anything, I just love him as a person.”

Colin Farrell’s performance as the Oz/Penguin was brilliant and a big reason for the success of The Batman. Fans of the Batman universe are looking forward to seeing his ‘rise to power’ in The Penguin.

What do you think of the trajectory of The Penguin going forward? Thoughts below as always.
