Cursed: Director Zetna Fuentes on Bringing Arthurian Story to Netflix [Exclusive Interview]

Cursed
Cursed. Starring Katherine Langford

Cursed is not the typical tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable.

Based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Tom Wheeler, Cursed is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend—told through the eyes of a fairy named Nimue. This young woman has a mysterious gift, who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Throughout her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins and their complicit King Uther.

Cursed is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time—the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible.

The series star Katherine Langford, Devon Terrell, Gustaf Skarsgard, Daniel Sharman, Sebastian Armesto, Matt Stokoe, Lily Newmark, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Emily Coates, Bill Jenkins, Bella Dayne, and Peter Mullan. Wheeler wrote the screenplay adapted from his book that was illustrated by Frank Miller.

LRM Online had an opportunity to hop on a conference call with Zetna Fuentes, one of the directors of the series. She directed the first two episodes—setting the pace for the rest of the story.

Fuentes is a television director, who has helmed numerous primetime dramas, including HBO’s The Duece, Showtime’s Ray Donovan, Showtime’s Shameless, NBC’s This is Us, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, and ABC’s Scandal. Her next project will be directing the upcoming The Gilded Age on HBO.

We discussed blending direction from practical locations and CGI backgrounds for the production. Also, she talked about setting the pace of the series for the other directors, and it was her first fantasy-setting series. Finally, it was also imperative to highlight the one-take shot sequence of a village raid that was noticeable in the series.

Cursed is now streaming exclusively on Netflix today.
