Daredevil Star Deborah Ann Woll’s Sad Tweet And My Heartbreak

When Iron Fist was canceled, I was disheartened but I understood. When Luke Cage was canceled, I was surprised and disapproved of the decision. Now, the canceling of Marvel’s Daredevil is nothing short of a shock to me. Matt Murdock is one of my all-time favorite Marvel characters, sitting at a very close second just behind the futurist Tony Stark on my top five. The blind lawyer-by-day, vigilante-by-night who battles crime with his fists and his super-heightened senses struck a chord with me. Whether it was his Catholic upbringing or his devotion to fighting injustice and protecting his city, “the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen” quickly appealed to me.

I was glued to the first season. I purchased the Frank Miller/John Romita, Jr. graphic novel Daredevil: The Man Without Fear and joined my podcasting co-hosts at The Capeless Crusaders in dedicating an entire episode to the story. I read the current comic arc as well. I was fully on board with Murdock. Now, as I finally find the time to binge season three, Netflix decides to do this:

“Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”

It didn’t help matters Thursday evening when I came across a tweet sent by star Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen and has been a part of Daredevil, The Defenders and The Punisher.

Is the series truly canceled or will Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist be soon making their way to Disney’s new streaming service? If so, will Jessica Jones and The Punisher be following soon? Who knows. Only time will tell. All I know is I’m going to savor every episode of season three as much as possible… and then probably watch the entire series again.

Thank you to Drew Goddard for creating the series, Erik Oleson for taking over the reigns as showrunner, Jeph Loeb, Joe Quesada, Dan Buckley and all the producers, and the amazingly talented Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson and the entire cast.

Moreover, thank you to Stan Lee, Bill Everett and Jack Kirby for creating Matt Murdock. I hope we have not seen the last of your creation’s live-action career.
