Darth Maul Was Never In Obi-Wan Kenobi Says Director Deborah Chow

Contrary to reports Darth Maul was never in Obi-Wan Kenobi says director Deborah Chow. Chow recently chatted with Total Film Magazine and responded to reports from THR that Maul was reportedly cut from the original script of Kenobi. Here is what Chow had to say, via Games Radar. You can also find our coverage of the original story Here.

“As long as I’ve been involved, we’ve never had Darth Maul in any of it. Dave [Filoni] did a beautiful job of telling that story already.”

Can’t help but agree with that, I never thought Maul made any sense whatsoever for this show. However, it was THR who reported this, it wasn’t some rumor from a smaller outlet like ourselves. Therefore, you kinda have to talk about it when it’s claimed by a trade.

Chow then went on to talk about why Vader was and is in the mix for this story.

“For anybody trying to tell a story in the middle of these two trilogies, there were only certain elements that made sense in where [Obi-Wan] is.”

“With a lot of the legacy aspects, the decision to bring Vader into it was not made lightly. We’re 10 years after Revenge Of The Sith. Where is Obi-Wan’s starting place? What has been important to him in his life? Anakin and Vader are a huge and very profound part of his life. We ended up feeling that he made sense in telling this story. And Vader casts such a dark shadow in this, that to have Maul as well, it might be a little bit much.”

Now it is possible theoretically that Maul was involved in a much earlier version of this story. Remember we’ve heard from reliable sources that at one point Kenobi was a movie. It’s also been reported that the script wasn’t up to scratch and after some feedback from Favreau and Filoni, plus a rumored Kevin Feige, the decision was made to re-purpose the script. Chow though was I believe involved by the time of the most recent script re-writes. However perhaps when it was a movie, things were even more different? Chow was certainly not involved at that point. Or, maybe THR just need to reconsider one of their sources?

Which is which? That’s a question I will leave you to answer for yourselves.

So, no, Darth Maul was never in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Or, at least he was never in from the point director Deborah Chow got involved.  As always, leave any thoughts below.
