David Ayer Confirms Fan Theory About Leto’s Joker Forehead Tattoo

It seems like the Joker has been a fan favorite villain for a very long time. On the big screen he has been portrayed by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and most recently Joaquin Phoenix. Out of this list none received more scrutiny than Leto’s version of the character.

2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Clown Prince of Crime. As part of the celebration, director for Suicide Squad David Ayer, released the first image of what Leto would look like as the Joker. Reactions were mixed at best as many had issues with the number of tattoos and silver teeth that the character had.

Sadly a lot of his scenes were left of the cutting floor. The amount of time that we see him on the screen didn’t help his case either. By the end of the film many fans were very unhappy with this version of the Joker. It was so bad that Warner Bros. has even kind of swept him under the rug.

One of the biggest complaints about the Joker in Suicide Squad was the tattoo that reads “damaged” across his forehead. Yesterday he took to Twitter to answer a fan, confirming a theory about why the Joker decided to get that tattoo. You can check it out below!

By the time the Joker killed Robin, he must have already have had several altercations with Batman. By that point he must have learned about his “no killing” rule. Knowing that he probably knew that even if he killed Robin, the worst that would happen would be a beat down and a trip to Arkham. So there would be nothing worse than reminding Batman about his failure and loss just by looking at the Jokers face.

I think that the explanation makes sense. The problem is that a lot of characters were just thrown into the DC Universe without any backstory. Details like those require storytelling, something that Warner Bros. didn’t seem like they were very interested in at the time. They were just rushing to catch up with Marvel Studios.
