This year looks to be a potentially pivotal one in the industry. Sure, last year we had STAR WARS, but in 2016, we will be getting two video game adaptations. While the genre has popped up in Hollywood fairly frequently since the 1990s, we have yet to have a full-on successful one. However, given the plethora of video games out there, it’s only a matter of time before one hits it big, giving the studios some confidence with which to greenlight other similar pictures.
In 2016, we’ll be getting both WARCRAFT and ASSASSIN’S CREED. While the latter is incredibly fit for the big screen, the former film definitely has a lot of heavy lifting to do. It’s an epic fantasy with a ridiculous number of visual effects, and as an MMORPG, there aren’t as many strong story points to pull from the video game as there are from ASSASSIN’S CREED. WARCRAFT is set to hit theaters this summer, but so far, all we’ve had to go off of is a single trailer.
On Twitter, however, director Duncan Jones has recently posted behind-the-scenes photos of the production. Keep in mind, these photos aren’t from reshoots, but rather a shot from the original production that he was unable to share until now.
If nothing else, some of these shots help put into perspective just how much CG they used in the film. Admittedly for the longest time, I thought virtually everything we saw in the trailer was CG with the exception of the live-action actors (JUNGLE BOOK-style). At least now we see that this is more on par with, say, LORD OF THE RINGS in terms of how the CG effects are mixed in with practical.
What do you think of the photos? Do they give you more or less faith in the adaptation? Let us know in the comments down below!
WARCRAFT hits theaters on June 10, 2016.
