Director Jay Roach Is Rooting For A Fourth Austin Powers Film

The long-hoped-for and long-rumored fourth Austin Powers film, I mean, why not? Right? The franchise, in my opinion, is Mike Myers at his best (though Wayne’s World does hold a special place in my adolescent heart), and I blame The Love Guru as the reason for us not having an Austin Powers 4 yet, Mike Myers seemed to drop off the map after that atrocious movie.

Jay Roach, who directed all three of the Austin Powers films recently spoke with MovieWeb and said a new installment into the franchise is still a regular topic of conversation when he and Mike Myers get together. You can check out what he had to say below

“We talk about it once a month, but until we know what it specifically wants to be. I don’t disagree that there is a classic battle in the Austin films, that of sort of love versus fear and paranoia, and color versus colorlessness, and music versus fear. Dr. Evil, there are some aspects of the way the world works right now that seem very Dr. Evil-y to me. I’ll just put it that way. But no, we don’t have a specific plan for anything right now.”

Roach continued:

“I root for it too. I root for it to come back, and so does Mike. We all have for a long time, it’s just always been, when the right story comes up and we know what it is, and that’s pretty much up to Mike.”

While I can’t remember exactly where I came across this information, I have heard, or read on more than one occasion that the fourth film would shift the majority of screentime from Austin to Dr.Evil, with the film having a focus on everyone’s favorite pinky-raising criminal mastermind. I always thought this was a fantastic idea, and for some time wondered, how with such a great premise, the project never moved forward.

Considering how long it’s been since Austin Powers in Goldmember was released, it’s hard to believe that Mike Myers hasn’t found the right story for a new installment to the franchise, perhaps other obstacles playing out behind the scenes are to blame. Surely a new Austin Powers film would be profitable, and again, considering the time since we last saw Austin and Dr. Evil, a new film is long overdue.
