The Little Mermaid

Disney’s live-action adaptation of the iconic animated musical The Little Mermaid is making its way to the screens of Disney+ subscribers on September 6, 2023. The film, which originally opened in theaters in May, grossed an astonishing $542 million worldwide, leaving audiences eager to dive back into the enchanting underwater world.

The Disney+ premiere promises an array of special bonus content exclusively for subscribers. Among the highlights is Oscar winner Javier Bardem’s performance as King Triton, as he takes center stage to perform the song “Impossible Child.” The song features music by multiple Academy Award winner Alan Menken, known for his work in Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, and lyrics penned by three-time Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, acclaimed for his work in Hamilton and In the Heights. Disney+ viewers can also look forward to bonus features like “Passing the Dinglehopper” and “Under the Sea – Song Breakdown.”

The Little Mermaid weaves the beloved tale of Ariel, an adventurous young mermaid longing to explore the world beyond the ocean’s depths. As the youngest and most rebellious daughter of King Triton, Ariel’s heart is drawn to Prince Eric, a handsome human she encounters during a visit to the surface. However, mermaids are forbidden from interacting with humans, leading Ariel to make a fateful deal with the conniving sea witch, Ursula. The agreement grants her the chance to experience life on land but puts her life and her father’s kingdom in peril.

The star-studded cast brings the enchanting characters to life, with singer and actress Halle Bailey as the spirited Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King as the charming Prince Eric. Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs lends his vocal talents to the role of Sebastian, while Awkwafina voices the hilarious Scuttle. Jacob Tremblay adds his voice to the endearing Flounder, and Noma Dumezweni takes on the role of The Queen. Art Malik appears as Sir Grimsby and the legendary Javier Bardem graces the screen as King Triton. Adding a touch of villainy is two-time Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy, portraying the cunning Ursula.

Directed by Oscar® nominee Rob Marshall, known for his work on “Chicago” and “Mary Poppins Returns,” and featuring a screenplay by two-time Oscar nominee David Magee, “The Little Mermaid” is set to be a dazzling visual feast. The film’s musical prowess is led by the talented Alan Menken, responsible for the memorable scores in “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin,” with lyrics by the late Howard Ashman and additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
