The Ayer Cut Of Suicide Squad Has New Hope… Maybe

You got to give DC fans credit because they won’t let some things just die. The original Suicide Squad director David Ayer has recently hinted that the long-speculated “Ayer Cut” of the film might see the light of day. In a discussion thread on X (aka Twitter) Ayer mentioned that while James Gunn is leading the charge in the DCU with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, he has expressed his support for Ayer’s vision to be revealed to fans. This revelation comes amidst the ongoing discourse around the film, reignited by Ayer himself through a cryptic image of Jared Leto’s Joker on social media which can be seen below.

Addressing the curiosity and interest of fans, Ayer acknowledged the polarizing nature of the 2016 film, with some passionately discussing it and others mocking it. The director expressed his belief that his unseen version surpasses the one released by the studio. It appears that the momentum to release the Ayer Cut has been bolstered further by Gunn, who assured Ayer that the time for its unveiling will come.

“All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects. In a way I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”

As James Gunn assumed the role of co-CEO of DC Studios, the #ReleaseTheAyerCut hashtag gained traction on social media platforms. Nevertheless, Gunn steered the focus toward the grand ambition of telling the “biggest story ever told” across multiple DCU projects, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter.

While Ayer continues to speak about his original cut and the differences it holds from the theatrical version, the question of whether the Ayer Cut will indeed be released remains uncertain. The DCU is of course undergoing significant transformations under the leadership of Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran. With a decade-long plan in the works, numerous DC characters are set to take center stage, and actors have signed on for both cinematic and television appearances.

The DCU is undoubtedly at a turning point, balancing the desire of some fans to explore past projects like the Ayer Cut with the need to forge ahead with a fresh vision under Gunn and Safran’s direction. The fans’ enthusiasm for the Ayer Cut showcases the passion they have for these characters and story of the original Suicide Squad. As the DCU evolves, it will be intriguing to witness how past projects like Blue Beetle and new endeavors harmoniously coexist, ultimately shaping this new superhero universe.

The journey ahead promises to be an exhilarating one, with fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming slate of DCU releases. Whether or not the Ayer Cut comes to fruition, one thing remains certain – the DCU is venturing into uncharted territory, where superheroes and supervillains alike will continue to captivate audiences, reminding us that life itself is a remarkable and unpredictable journey.
