Eddie Murphy Could Have Been Eddie Valiant In who Framed Roger Rabbit

It’s fun to speculate how a movie may have turned out had an actor who wasn’t able to take on or eventually turned down a role that became iconic. One of the more well-known is Tom Selleck being the first choice for Indiana Jones but was unable to play the character due to the filming schedule of his popular TV series, Magnum P.I.

Today comes news of Eddie Murphy, who had a chance to play detective Eddie Valiant in the classic film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The role ultimately went to actor Bob Hoskins, who absolutely nailed it to the point of it being hard to imagine anyone else as he character.

“Now, every time I see it, I feel like an idiot. I was like, ‘What? Animation and people, that just sound like bullsh*t to me.'”

While I am intrigued by the idea of Murphy in the role, I think Hoskins’s demeanor better fit the idea of the character, it played so well off Roger Rabbit’s cartoony attitude. I feel Murphy would have been too comedic, and wouldn’t have given Valiant and Roger the odd couple effect that worked so well in the film.
