Elijah Wood Would Cameo in Lord Of The Rings TV Show? I Hope Not

Elijah Wood would cameo in The Lord of the Rings TV show? That’s a bit bizarre considering it’ll be set thousands of years before Frodo was alive. I was somewhat surprised to read the headline from IndieWire. Wood obviously played Frodo, the central character of the movies and books upon which they were based. So could Frodo show up in The Lord of the Rings TV show? Frodo could appear to be honest (see after the quotes). However, I’m not sure it’s advisable.

Luckily, Wood seems to realize this himself and explains the problem to the outlet who spoke to him. Check it out.

“I am super fascinated by what they’re doing with the show. They’re calling it The Lord of the Rings, but I think that’s slightly misleading. From what I understand, the material they are working on exists chronologically further back in history in the lore of Lord of the Rings or middle-Earth than any characters represented in Lord of the Rings. It sounds more Silmarillion era. Not to get nerdy, but it’s the Second Age of middle-Earth.”

“In that sense, I’m just curious what the storytelling is going to be. It’s clear the world is middle-Earth and I’m glad they are shooting in New Zealand. It feels like there will be at least a visual continuity with what we had all done on the movies. It’s no surprise they are about to start shooting again, or have the go-ahead to do so, because New Zealand conquered this thing and they’re Coronavirus free. It’s one of the few places on the planet where [resuming production] is possible.”

Explaining the Timeline

Frodo’s adventures took place from around 3018-3021 of the Third Age. Whilst we don’t know for certain, it seems like the show will begin around the first thousand years of the Second Age. The map pictured above was released to coincide with Amazon’s show, firmly placing it within the Second Age. The Second Age lasted for 3,444 years. That means we are at least five thousand years out from Frodo even being born. However, this is still the story of The Lord of the Rings. In fact, it’s highly likely that the first season of the show will start with the creation of these Rings of power.

Though, when asked if he would cameo in the show by the outlet the actor replied

“Absolutely, If there was a world where that made sense and was organic to what they’re doing than yes. Look, any excuse to get to go to New Zealand to work on something I am absolutely there.”

I alluded to it above, so here it is. Yes, it is possible for Frodo to appear in Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings. However, for me, it would be cheesy as hell and I hope it doesn’t happen. Frodo could narrate The Lord of the Rings show, or have it narrated to him by another character like Aragorn, prior to Frodo’s departure from middle-Earth. As said though, this is not a technique I would like to see utilized.

For me, the stories presented within The Lord of the Rings TV show should be able to stand on their own two feet. The actual The Lord of the Rings novels might be how this tale ends, but the start is about Sauron, the Elves, and the Numenoreans, not Hobbits.

What do you think of the news Elijah Wood would cameo in The Lord of the Rings TV show? He knows it shouldn’t happen, we know it shouldn’t happen, but will Amazon get wind of this and do something stupid? Leave your thoughts below.
