Ewan McGregor Says Shining Sequel Doctor Sleep Will Remain Faithful To The Novel

Hitting theaters today is the Marc Foster-directed Christopher Robin. The film tells the tale of a grown-up, working-class family man Christopher Robin (played by Ewan McGregor) who is reunited with his childhood friend Winnie-the-Pooh. Pooh, along with Piglet, Rabbit, Tigger and Eeyore, help remind Christopher about the joys of life.

After this film’s release, McGregor will be making the transition from a character rediscovering the joys of life to a character plagued with darkness and death. Next up, McGregor will play a grown-up Danny Torrence in the sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep. The film, based on the 2013 Stephen King novel of the same name, takes places decades after the classic with Danny still psychological traumatized by his “shining” abilities as he becomes the target of a new evil.

While on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert promoting Christopher Robin, McGregor touched slightly on the upcoming sequel, mentioning that the film will remain “faithful to the book.” Not only could this be a relief to fans of the novel, but it may also be a relief to the author himself. It’s become well known in recent times that King was not a fan of the Stanley Kubrick-directed film adaptation, especially in its portrayal of mom Wendy Torrance, though it had nothing to do with actress Shelley Duvall’s talent. King has stated that he prefers the 1997 TV miniseries starring Rebecca De Mornay and Steven Weber.

Doctor Sleep is currently in pre-production and is slated for a 2020 release.
