Fans Theorizing As More Connections Emerge Between True Detective Season 1 And 4

True Detective gets a Season 5 with the same showrunner as Season 4, Issa López; Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...

In the latest episode of True Detective more connections emerge between Season 1 and 4, which has got fans theorizing like crazy. For anyone who has followed True Detective since it began, you know that it’s an anthology series. Season 2 and Season 3 had zero connections (outside of thematic) with Season 1, or each other. Despite trailers for Season 4 of the show having the spiral from Season 1 no one really thought this was fully connected. However, right now, one could argue Season 4 is beginning to look like a sequel to Season 1.

The spirals are one thing, and easily hand waved away as thematic. However there are now some tangible connections to Season 1 set up in Episode 2. Like for a start, it seems Rust’s dad who left for Alaska dying of cancer is actually Travis. The dead guy, who alerted his surviving lover Rose to where the bodies were located in Episode 1. The show even names the character Travis Cohle. That’s the same surname as Rust from Season 1. The weird spelling is even confirmed by the subtitles on the show, so that feels intentional.

If that’s not enough for you, what about the name Tuttle? In Season 1 the Tuttles were the leaders of the cult that the killer Errol Childress was a follower of. If you recall the Tuttles were a powerful and political family in Season 1’s narrative. Then we have Peter say in Episode 2 of Season 4 that the TSALAL research lab was being funded by Tuttle United. That’s the lab doing weird secretive work who’s workers all died mysteriously by the way.

Add to this the weird stuff they found in the trailer in Episode 2. I’m no expert on the show, but I see fans going over all the still images and finding connections to Season 1 aesthetics.

There is still so much mystery though after just two episodes that it’s hard to predict where this is all going? Season 1 may have hinted at the supernatural, whilst never really taking the plunge. However, so far Season 4 is pushing even harder in that direction. I mean, we all saw Travis appear to Rose and the way the deer committed suicide in the opening scene of the season.

We also can’t yet say how everyone’s personal history plays into what is happening here? Some bad stuff has gone down in the past for a lot of folks in town. However, so far we don’t really understand what happened as the audience. I’m therefore thoroughly enjoying the show so far, but I was not expecting all these hints to Season 1.

What do you think then? Is Season 4 of True Detective a sequel, or side story to Season 1? What did you think of the latest episode of True Detective as more connections emerge between Season 1 and 4? Get down with the fan theorizing yourself below. What the hell is going on?
