Film critic Amy Nicholson, known for her film reviews on Rotten Tomatoes as well as hosting the podcasts Unspooled and The Canon, has begun her next big project in the podcast world: tackling Michael Myers. Teaming up with pop culture site The Ringer, Nicholson is presenting an 8-part series called Halloween Unmasked, focusing on the creation of one of the greatest horror films in cinematic history, Halloween. With less than 19 days until the release of writer/director David Gordon Green’s film, this podcast is a well-timed addition in the year that marks the 40th anniversary of the classic film.
The first episode, released Monday morning, delves into the history of horror movies before Michael stormed into the suburbs. It also gives a backstory to the film’s co-writer and director, the legendary John Carpenter. It focuses on the world that Carpenter grew up in, where Jim Crow was law, racism was rampant and how one sci-fi film from 1956 forever changed him, sending him on his creative and visionary path.
