Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy has given me new appreciation for the prequels, I always loved Revenge of the Sith but was always good for a joke on Phantom Menace (this is still the coolest title in the saga) and Attack of the Clones. I know they’re not great, but I love me some Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and what awesome music by John Williams, and as bad as they might be they just feel more like Star Wars.

One thing the seque trilogy didn’t give me, is any more love for Jar Jar Binks. Never liked the character, I don’t out right hate him, but no, just no. During this year’s Star Wars Celebration, the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, sent a prerecorded message that was to be played during the Phantom Menace‘s 20th anniversary panel. In the message Lucas declared that Jar Jar Binks is his favorite Star Wars character

I think during the making of the prequels Lucas simply had too many “yes men (or women)” around him. Did no one have the courage to say, “Mr Lucas, hi I’m low-level employee #2187, and you can fire me or whatever you want to do, but I have to tell you, Jar Jar sucks man, it’s a bad idea.” Who knows maybe there was a brave soul who did just that, and Lucas didn’t take the advice, I certainly would have been that guy.

The prequels have found new life as memes. The vast majority of them are fantastic, and I believe, for the most part anyway, they’re more valuable nowadays as memes, than films. Although this could stem from my obsessions with memes.
