Geoff Johns is set to bring the first character he created for DC comics to the screen. Johns will again work with Sarah Schechter and Greg Berlanti to bring a Stargirl series to DC’s new streaming service, DC Universe (which can now be preordered at $74.99/year). In speaking with Deadline, Johns said this is a very emotional project for him to bring to the screen.
“Obviously, Stargirl was the first character I created for DC. Most important, Courtney Whitmore was inspired by my sister who passed away. To have an opportunity to tell a story celebrating this superhero was literally the first thing I wanted to do because it is so personal to me. Also, a character that speaks to being young, to a legacy and to pushing forward seems so important to me nowadays.”

The character made her first appearance as Stargirl in 2003, after having first appeared as The Star-Spangled Kid in 1999. Stargirl’s abilities include enhanced speed, strength, agility, and stamina thanks to her cosmic converter belt. She also has a cosmic staff that allows her to manipulate energy and gives her the ability to fly. Stargirl is also a highly trained kickboxer and gymnast.
