Geoff Johns is set to bring the first character he created for DC comics to the screen. Johns will again work with Sarah Schechter and Greg Berlanti to bring a Stargirl series to DC’s new streaming service, DC Universe (which can now be preordered at $74.99/year). In speaking with Deadline, Johns said this is a very emotional project for him to bring to the screen.
“Obviously, Stargirl was the first character I created for DC. Most important, Courtney Whitmore was inspired by my sister who passed away. To have an opportunity to tell a story celebrating this superhero was literally the first thing I wanted to do because it is so personal to me. Also, a character that speaks to being young, to a legacy and to pushing forward seems so important to me nowadays.”

Johns is set to executive produce as well as write the series, the news comes straight out of San Diego Comic-Con. The character made her first appearance as Stargirl in 2003, after having first appeared as The Star-Spangled Kid in 1999. Stargirl’s abilities include enhanced speed, strength, agility, and stamina thanks to her cosmic converter belt. She also has a cosmic staff that allows her to manipulate energy and gives her the ability to fly. Stargirl is also a highly trained kickboxer and gymnast.
