Ghostbusters Has Been Officially Resurrected By Jason Reitman

After the debacle that was Ghostbusters 2016, we wondered whether this would be the death knell for the franchise. Not only was the film bashed critically, it didn’t pull down any trees financially either. Fans of old were unhappy and it didn’t seem to gather any new fans, which might have been what Sony had hoped for.

Since then the mistakes that were made have been pulled apart to no end and the only hope seemed to be some vague suggestions of Ghostbusters 3 still being viable from Dan Ackroyd. The problem being that Ackroyd has been pushing that idea around for over a decade now without anything happening. But now there is something unexpected in the works over at Sony.

EW has revealed that plans are in place for a reboot/sequel to the original Ghostbusters franchise and that this is being headed up by director Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, the original director of Ghostbusters. Apparently, Reitman will both direct the film and has co-written the script with Gil Kenan (Monster House). Sony has dated the film for summer 2020 with filming due to begin in the next few months.

Here is what Reitman said about the movie.

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

On whether it is connected to the Paul Feig reboot of 2016?

“I have so much respect for what Paul created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film.”

There have been no additional details shared and at this time we don’t know if there will be any involvement from the original actors such as Ackroyd, Murray or Hudson.

“This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet.”

So it looks like Ghostbusters is back on the menu boys. One of the major complaints of the Paul Feig reboot was the fact it followed basically the same plot of the original movie and yet didn’t reference any of the events in those originals. Fans pretty much unanimously said they would have preferred this to be a passing of the torch affair. Well, let’s hope Sony has listened and that’s why Reitman’s script has been greenlit.

Can it capture the pop culture the way that original movie did in 1984? Hard to say, but as someone who watched this in its initial theater run, I can tell you that Ghostbusters was absolutely huge amongst the kids of my generation. I have less affection for the sequel, but Ghostbusters remains one of those films that started me on this fanboy journey. I’ll keep my fingers crossed Reitman has a way to bring this back in a respectful way that honors the original stories.
