GRRM Gives New The Winds Of Winter Update To Fans – Longest Book Of Series

George R. R. Martin (GRRM) gives a new The Winds of Winter update to fans, confirming for one that it is the longest book in the series currently. Now, if the update was as dramatic as fans hope, I’d have led with that in the title. Therefore, no, we don’t have a release date and Martin won’t make any prediction on when it will be ready. He did however talk through his current progress and what is holding him back.

So if you don’t want to watch the video, what did Martin have to say? Well, other than the book still isn’t ready. Currently Martin estimates he’s around two thirds of the way to completing The Winds of Winter. However, in the same breath Martin explains why it seems like he’s been two thirds done for a while.

The most important aspect is quality control. When Martin goes back over old chapters, he begins to dislike them and feels they need to be rewritten. There’s also Martin’s gardener style of writing, that can go anywhere. Therefore, Martin also stresses that The Winds of Winter is currently the largest books in the series by far. He says Winds is currently well beyond either A Storm of Swords or A Dance with Dragons. So much so that even when he’s finished he’s worried when he sends it to the publisher they’re going to tell him it’s too big and needs to be split in two. Which, clearly is something Martin does not wish to do.

The final factor is that Martin has various other projects and pastimes and it’s kinda his call on how fast he works. I doubt fans wish for an underwhelming book, and would rather he nails it. However, I also think many of the hardcore fanbase have simply given up waiting for this book. Many are convinced Martin has painted himself into a hole he cannot escape and thus the novel will never be released. Martin himself appears bullish in his desire to finish this book. However, he also looks exhausted already at the though of then working on A Dream of Spring, the final novel he has planned for the A Song of Ice and Fire saga.

Martin also has other books to finish, some in this universe and some outwith. Then we have all the Game of Thrones spin-off shows which he is involved with, even if not full time. So sadly, for now there is no prediction from Martin as to when Winds will be finished. Just a guarantee that he will keep trying to finish it as best he can.

What do you think of this news as GRRM gives a new The Winds of Winter update to fans, confirming that it is the longest book in the series currently? Thoughts below as always.
