Hemsworth Admits Thor: Love And Thunder ‘Became Too Silly’

In a recent interview Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth admits the film 'became too silly' in the end.

In a recent interview Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth admits the film ‘became too silly’ in the end. After rave reviews for Thor: Ragnarok, many fans had high hopes for the re-teaming of Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi. In the end however, many fans (not me weirdly) were disappointed. For many, the film was just a bit too mental, had too much comedy and too little drama.

I liked the movie, but I head canon the silliness by saying the movie is Korg’s version of how events unfolded, as he is the narrator. Ergo, that’s how Korg thinks it went. However, unless Waititi ever confirms my theory, it is just my head canon. Or, as the kids call it these days, it’s copium.

Speaking with GQ, Hemsworth says they had tremendous fun filming Love and Thunder. However perhaps being in there at the time, they hadn’t realized how sill it all became. However, his kids friends decided to give him some home truths and he admits they’re valid.

“It’s a bunch of eight-year-olds critiquing my film. ‘We thought this one had too much humour, the action was cool but the VFX weren’t as good,’” he recalls. “I cringe and laugh equally at it.” Released in 2022, Love and Thunder was a hit at the box office but received mixed reviews from the (grown-up) critics. “I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly,” reflects Hemsworth. He pauses. “It’s always hard being in the centre of it and having any real perspective… I love the process, it’s always a ride. But you just don’t know how people are going to respond.”

I appreciated it, maybe it was my kind of humor, and I could detach it from the serious side of Thor through my head canon. That being said, I think the vast majority of the LRM Online and GenreVerse crew had the same opinions as the eight year old’s. Kids can be the best critics sometimes, they just say how they feel with no BS.

As for whether Thor will return or not? Hemsworth is still keen, but it needs to the right take for the character.

“If I was going to do something again it would have to be tonally different. And we’d have to do something very drastic to keep people on their toes. Otherwise it’s just the fatigue of those characters and those films, where people are like, ‘I’ve seen it.’”

For me, I don’t think we need to see Thor back for a while. Last we saw him, he’s away being a father to Love and also teaching her how to kick some butt. That girl is going to be seriously OP when she grows up and hits the MCU wielding Stormbreaker. I’m not sure I’d wish for Thor to die, but I think he should get to wait a few years and come back a little older. Kinda like King Thor from the comics. Perhaps he’s been somewhere that time passes quicker and for him and Love thousands of years have passed and they’ve been ruling/protecting a new place. That means they can always bring back Old Man Thor if they need him again.

That would also exclude Thor from the next two Avengers movies potentially, which I’m okay with.

What do you think of his comments as Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth admits the film ‘became too silly’ in the end? Thoughts below as always.
