Hold The Phones…Rick Moranis May Return For Honey I Shrunk The Kids Reboot?

To many kids from the ‘80s and ‘90s, Rick Moranis is a legend. A god among men. Some third thing that’s revered. He has his place in the Ghostbusters franchise — where he has refused to return — as well as in the movie Spaceballs, where he played the hilarious Dark Helmet. His story is one that has been repeated many times in geek circles. He pretty much slowly and deliberately exited from the spotlight to be a single father, which, of course, is admirable.

That being said, there are plenty of folks out there who wish he would return in the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife. While he may not be returning to that franchise, if we’re to believe a rumor, he may be back for another beloved franchise.

According to DisInsider, Moranis is in early talks to reprise his role as Wayne Szalinski in Disney’s Honey I Shrunk the Kids reboot, which has Josh Gad attached to star as Nick, Wayne’s son. In addition to this news, the outlet shared an oddly-written paragraph that appears to be a character description of Wayne Szalinski.

“Aware that the family ties have loosened over time but seemingly afraid to confront anyone directly. He has been tinkering alone in his attic for decades, dealing with the grief of losing his wife. When we first meet him, he has accidentally shrunk himself and is flying around on a shrunken drone — seemingly lost in a continuous of tinkering and experimenting that often puts himself and his family in jeopardy. He later reveals he shut himself away to try and invent a solution to help shrink Diane’s cancer but found it hard to cope when he ran out of time. His guilt and shame is palpable. Through the crisis of the kids getting shrunk, the truth emerges and the bonds begin to redevelop between him and his kids.”

Well, that’s certainly a dark direction to take the character, but I appreciate the willingness to take him in an unexpected direction. It is another reminder that characters’ lives don’t simply stop because movies stop getting made.

Without a doubt, this would be a huge way to gain some credibility for this ambitious Disney “legacyequel,” as it’s being coined. Moranis may have been a big deal for Ghostbusters fans, but he was also quite the big deal for kids of the ‘90s who first experienced him through Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

At this time, nothing has been signed, but the fact that he’s in early talks at all seems to be a good omen. I also take solace in the fact that this movie is set to be directed by the great Joe Johnston, who helmed the classic original movie.

What do you think of Rick Moranis returning to the Honey I Shrunk the Kids franchise?
