How Game Of Thrones Author Contributed To Show’s Ending

When Game of Thrones first began no one involved had any idea that we would be where we are now. By that I mean, that the show’s final season is almost upon us and yet books author George RR. Martin has still to finish of the second to last book on the A Song Of Ice And Fire book series. It was expected that by the time the show caught up with the novels, Martin would have completed his books and as such the show would attempt to adapt the stories for TV in the same way any other TV adaptation does.

However, Martin has been slow to carry the story forward at a pace that the TV show can live with. After all, they can’t really just abandon the show, yet somehow keep all the actors on a contract to come back whenever George finishes another book. Instead, the producers and HBO made the wise decision to push on based on information Martin had given them at the start.

In a feature about Game of Thrones actresses Maise Williams and Sophie Turner who play Arya and Sansa Stark respectively, Rolling Stone also spoke to George Martin and the ending of the show came up, here is what the author said.

“I’ve been so slow with these books,” Martin says, with palpable pain. “The major points of the ending will be things I told them five or six years ago. But there may also be changes, and there’ll be a lot added.”

This is actually pretty important as there have been never-ending debates amongst book fans and show fans as to whether the ending of the show will realistically have any similarity to the end of the books (that’s if Martin ever finishes them, which there is no guarantee of). As an unsuccessful writer myself, I couldn’t quite imagine writing a fantasy epic without at least having an idea of the main beats from the ending. But, there is a difference between having a vague idea, a guide if you will, to actually writing that ending.

In my own works I have a vague idea on where the ending will go, I always have, but if I ever get there, will it be exactly the same? This seems unlikely to me, and I imagine for a superior writer such as Martin, it’s the same thing. Martin also calls his writing style being a ‘gardener’, this means he is willing to change any of his ideas around as they develop in his own head and he tends to go off on tangents.

However, by the time George initially spoke with showrunners Benioff and Weiss, he was already quite far into the series and must have had a very good idea of where things would go. I find it unlikely that the “major points” that Martin told the Game of Thrones writer/producers five years ago will be that outrageously different to what he ends up doing in the books. Though Game of Thrones has killed off characters that Martin might not and vice versa, so it is unlikely to match up as closely with how we get to that endpoint, as it does with the ending itself.
