Is This Stranger Things Character Actually Alive?

So apparently Stranger Things 2 Episode 7 was a controversial ones for fans. Some felt like it served more as filler than anything else, turning from a real Stranger Things episode to something like The Gifted, while others appreciated the added depth it added to Eleven (for what it’s worth, I’m a part of the latter group, as it made Eleven a master of her own fate for once).

However, there is one other aspect that was interesting — the return of Brenner, Eleven’s “dad” from the first season. In the context of the scene, I didn’t think his presence hinted at his actually still being alive, but as an interview with Stranger Things director Shawn Levy revealed…he may very well be.

“We took a big swing for instance to open the show with a car chase in another city, then Episode 7 goes to another city for an entire episode. Whether or not people feel that episode was entirely successful, the Duffers want to take some swings, and they know that they’re not gonna please everybody. But that feeling of the world getting a bit bigger especially coupled with the fact that it now seems clear that Brenner is alive, Brenner is out there. I for one think that that one scene with Modine and Millie in Episode 7 is one of the juiciest scenes, and it kind of brought me back to how haunting Modine is in that Brenner role. So that’s a major unanswered question, and also we’ve now confirmed that Eleven isn’t the only one. There are other numbers.”

Admittedly, this feels like a stretch. To me, Brenner’s appearance was nothing more than a manipulation from Eleven’s “sister,” and if it turns into something more, I may become disinterested in the story to come. But we’ll have to wait and see how it’s executed, because execution is key.
