Writer David Chase is set to bring fans back to the world of The Sopranos with the prequel film The Many Saints of Newark. The film will feature a young Tony Soprano, and now fans finally know who will take on that now iconic role made famous by James Gandolfini.
None other than James Gandolfini’s son, Michael, will has been cast in the role his father made famous. In speaking with Deadline Gandolfini had the following to say about landing the role.
“A profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.”
Gandolfini’s namesake wasn’t the reason he was cast, the film’s director Alan Taylor and David Chase say he was chosen after what the described as an “extensive audition process.” It’s not often a casting such as this happens, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Michael Gandolfini’s “screen presence, mastery of Tony’s mannerisms,” were also said to be attributes that helped him land the role.
