Jason Bateman Issues Apology For His Comments On The Jessica Walter/Jeffrey Tambor Incident

Some real-life drama from the fictional Bluth family has emerged. Recently, actress Jessica Walter said that fellow Arrested Development cast member, Jeffrey Tambor verbally harassed her. The actress says she doesn’t dwell on the situation and what happened would not prevent her from working with him again. Jason Bateman, who plays Michael Bluth on the show, has now found himself being criticized for his statement referring to what happened between Walter and Tambor.

Bateman’s original statement:

“Not to belittle it, but a lot of stuff happens in 15 years… In the entertainment industry it is incredibly common to have people who are, in quotes, ‘difficult.’… You have different people’s processes that converge and collide at times. So Jeffrey is not just popping off, coming out of his car and some unhinged guy… Not to say that you know, you [Walter] had it coming. But this is not in a vacuum — families come together and certain dynamics collide and clash every once in a while. And there’s all kinds of things that go into the stew so it’s a little narrow to single that one particular thing that is getting attention from our show.”

After receiving the criticism for the above statement, Bateman then issued an apology clarifying he wasn’t condoning Tambor’s actions.

“Based on listening to the NYT interview and hearing people’s thoughts online, I realize that I was wrong here. I sound like I’m condoning yelling at work. I do not. It sounds like I’m excusing Jeffery. I do not. It sounds like I’m insensitive to Jessica. I am not. In fact, I’m horrified that I wasn’t more aware of how this incident affected her.”

Walter appears to have moved past the incident, saying,“I have to let go of being angry at him.” Walter also said she would work with Tambor again, “I respect him as an actor. We’ve known each other for years and years and years. No, no, no, no. Of course, I would work with him again in a heartbeat.”

I don’t think Bateman meant anything bad by his statement, unfortunately, that is the way a lot of folks took his words.
