Jason Momoa has now revolutionized the way a star appears on the red carpet. Where others walk, wave and pose for the press, Momoa introduced an ancestral and emotional element to the evening. Along with a large crew, which included his children, Momoa performed a traditional haka before the masses in attendance.
Variety captured the entire moment as Momoa summoned the others and lined up in formation. Momoa called it in traditional Polynesian dialect, kicking things off with breaking his Aquaman staff in half across his knee. Early on near the wall, you can see his wife Lisa Binet watching on as Momoa pridefully shares his culture with the Aquaman fans.

For those unaware, the haka is a traditional dance or challenge that originates within the Māori culture. The haka went on to be adopted by most Polynesian cultures and has made its presence felt in the mainstream. Sports teams like the New Zealand All-Blacks (Rugby) and the University Of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (football) perform the haka as a pregame ritual. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, as the character Hobbs in Furious 7, lead his daughter’s soccer team in a pregame haka and, as the voice of Maui, performed a haka in the epic climax of Moana.
Aquaman, directed by James Wan, opens worldwide on December 21st.
