Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will be released in just over a month. The film is set to focus on a young Albus Dumbledore stopping Grindelwald’s plan to have pure blood wizards rule over us Muggles. Playing Grinderwald is the one and only Johnny Depp. Depp recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his character and commented on the the comparisons that some have made between his character and Donald Trump.
I don’t see Donald Trump comparisons at all. To me, there’s something almost childlike in [Grindelwald]. His dream is for the wizard world to stand tall and above. It’s a fascistic element, and there’s nothing more dangerous than somebody who is a dreamer with a specific vision that’s very strong and very dangerous and he can make it happen. But no character wakes up and goes, ‘I’m going to do the worst things possible today and be evil as hell.’ I do believe Grindelwald is an oddly likable character.”

I have to agree with Depp, in most villains there is something that can be found to be liked about them, take Thanos, from his certain point of view, he is doing the right thing, a noble act in his mind. And that may be similar to how Grindelwald feels. While Depp’s casting created controversy due to assault allegations, if his previous films can tell us anything about his ability to play unusual characters, it’s that Depp should make a nice addition to the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald hits theaters on November 16.
