Joker: Marc Maron Describes Film As Character Study Of Mentally Ill Person, Talks Working With Robert De Niro

2019 is looking to be a pretty solid year for comic book movies. We’ve already had Captain Marvel hit theaters, Shazam! is on the way, Avengers: Endgame is set to blow off the doors of the box office, and that’s not even mentioning Joker, which is set hit theaters this coming August. Throughout the production of the movie, we’ve seen plenty of promising images and set videos, and by all accounts, we should be excited.

One actor who has likely said the most about the movie so far is comedian Marc Maron. Maron isn’t exactly known for his love of comic book movies, so his involvement in Joker appeared to be hypocritical, at best. But, in a recent interview with NME, the comedian opened up about this perceived hypocrisy, proving that it really does all depend on who’s involved.

“I think it’s a very interesting approach to this world,” Maron explained. “I’ve been somewhat judgmental when it comes to comic book movies and I’ve got a little pushback in the press for being a hypocrite. Whatever I think, if you get a call and someone says, ‘Hey do you wanna do a scene with Robert De Niro and Joaquin Phoenix?’ your principles fall to the wayside. If it’s relative to what I think of Marvel movies then it’s like, ‘Yeah, of course I’m gonna do that’. Oddly, it’s not that kind of movie. The approach that Todd Phillips has taken is more of an origin story and a character study of a mentally ill person that becomes The Joker. It’s more of an intimate and gritty movie with a very specific scope. It’s going to be really interesting to see how it comes out.”

Given the involvement of such greats, it’s hard to really judge him too harshly. The outlet went on to ask him about working with De Niro on the film.

“It was great to meet [De Niro] and it was great to see him work,” Maron said. “I wasn’t really beside myself because they do become people very quickly. When you’re not shooting you are just hanging around. Still, he’s Robert De Niro and the subtleties of how he does what he does is innate and amazing to watch. He’s a nice guy and kinda shy, but it was a great experience and not too much of a mindf**k.”

His comments continue the trend of exciting ones for the movie. As exciting as all these other comic book movies are this year, from a creative standpoint, Joker still stands out as perhaps the most potentially-interesting. But what do you think? Let us know down below!
