Are we going to see Jon Bernthal as Punisher again in a reboot? Bernthal was hugely popular in the role of Frank Castle in the Netflix Punisher show as well as Daredevil, but that was back then. All the Marvel Netflix properties were cancelled, but there has always been rumors that Bernthal could return. Now we have some more solid hints that Charlie Cox will play Matt Murdock in Spider-Man 3, and rumors that the actor may play Murdock in a Daredevil reboot.

So perhaps it’s not such a shock to hear a new rumor that we will see a return for Jon Bernthal as Punisher. This information comes from Giant Freaking Robot, who indicate that the reboot term may be a matter of opinion. Bernthal is being eyed for the MCU proper, and GFR don’t think there will be much reference to Netflix. That could be called a reboot, or a soft reboot, or it could be a continuation depending on your own views. The key point from this rumor is that apparently Marvel don’t want audiences to have watched the Netflix shows before understanding who Frank Castle is.

The issue that always sticks in the back of my head though is the rating. Daredevil could be toned down for Disney, it could. However, I am not sure Punisher can, after all Frank is a killer. Whatever way you look at him, Frank takes the law into his own hands and kills with no mercy. Frank Castle is a soldier fighting a war against crime, and that also makes him a criminal. I’m simply not sure that will ever be an appropriate character to explore for the younger audience.

Would Marvel make an R-rated Punisher show/movie and only show it on Star/Hulu? That for me is the sticking point that needs to be resolved. I want to see more Jon Bernthal as Punisher. I just don’t want Frank to become a superhero, because he never was. Leave any thoughts you have below as always.
