Kevin Feige’s Comments On Why Black Widow Took So Long To Happen Show He Doesn’t ‘Get’ Prequel Concerns

Black Widow will Release early

Kevin Feige comments on why Black Widow took so long to come to fruition…but do his comments clear up another concern? Read on to find out!

Yeah, none of us like prequels too much. Whenever there’s a prequel announced there’s an understandable rolling of the eyes from many fans. Why would we care about a character’s journey if we already know when they end up? This is a question fans ask virtually every single time, and I’ve certainly asked it in regards to the upcoming Black Widow movie. That question grew even more important after we learned of the character’s fate in Avengers: Endgame.

Like some fans, I was actually a bit annoyed about the whole thing. Many of us have been clamoring for a Black Widow film ever since Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out, and yet it took how many years to get this off the ground? Why does she only get a standalone film after she’s dead and seemingly no longer relevant? The whole thing really took the wind out of the sails for the character for me. Would I even care about this character’s journey in Black Widow now?

“We had been planning the conclusion for the Infinity Saga for the past five or six years, and Natasha’s journey within those films took the priority,” Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige explained to EW. “The notion of breaking out for a stand-alone film that takes place in the past, for a character that we already knew and were already following, didn’t feel right.”

So, from the sound of it, it sounds like they really wanted to focus on giving Natasha Romanoff a complete character arc over the course of the main line of Avengers-driven movies. Had they inserted a film in between with a completely new arc, it could make her arc in those other films feel a bit…odd. I can certainly understand where Feige is coming from here. You want to make sure that long arc is paid off and feels right.

Natasha was a character who had no family and who made the ultimate sacrifice for the family she chose: The Avengers. You can see how much this family meant to her in Avengers: Endgame, and it definitely makes that arc one worth seeing.

However, in saying that, it still kinda irks me. In Avengers: Endgame, her journey was all about family. It was all about making that family that she never had. And yet, with Black Widow, it looks like she has this really close family to her that she never spoke of or acknowledged? A part of me wonders that her arc in Endgame will feel disingenuous after we watch Black Widow. All of a sudden, her claims that she never had a family until the Avengers feel a lot less real.

Of course, we don’t know how this thing will end. It could all go very tragically and result in everyone either dying or hating her. Perhaps it’ll all make sense. That doesn’t stop me from being just the slightest bit concerned about this whole ordeals. While I can see why they waited so long to make this happen, I don’t see this comment from Feige as him understanding why a prequel would concern fans.

At the very least, he understands that this movie simply can’t be Solo: A Star Wars Story, in that it checks off a bunch of boxes along the way.

“A prequel that simply filled in the blanks of things you already know is not very exciting,” Feige said. “How does she get her Widow stingers for the first time? How did she learn to do a flip? That doesn’t matter.”

At least we can agree on that.
