Anyone would be forgiven for thinking the Lando Disney+ series was quietly canned. However, star Donald Glover says it’s very much still on. IF it’s good enough to push ahead that is. Glover rather than Billy Dee Williams was always expected to lead the series. However, a few things happened since that show was first announced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Importantly, the Solo movie bombed, and then we had the small matter of COVID. Word on Lando went very cold indeed.
I’m guessing much of the delay is down to two factors. One, that Donald Glover is a busy man and needs time to find space in a schedule for filming. Secondly, given Glover has time on his side, I think he’s waiting for Lucasfilm to get a solid series together. Glover’s words below from when he spoke to GQ recently seem to indicate both.
“I mean, I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time to be him. It just has to be the right, it just needs to be the right way to do it. I’m all about like, now it’s like, you know, like time is precious. I think everybody’s like, you know, in the past couple of years this pandemic shit, like, really, had people experience time in a way where they’re like well why am I? I should be around oranges.”
“Like, and people, you know, like people kind of realize like their time is valuable, you know, you only get so much. So like, I’m not interested in doing anything that’s just gonna be like a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather like, you know, spend time with people that I like, enjoy.”
“So it just has to be the right thing which I think it could be. I mean like Lando is definitely somebody I’d like to hang out with. So yeah, I mean we’re talking about it. That’s as much as I can say, you know, without Kathleen Kennedy like, hunting me down.”

Of course, you may read into what Glover says differently than I do? For me, he’s saying he’s still talking to KK, but so far, it’s not been good enough to make him commit. If it’s not going to be a great show, why bother wasting his time, the money isn’t an attraction to him? Playing Lando in a great story is what will attract Glover back to the role.
