Legend Of Zelda Sequel In Development, Cinematic Trailer Hints At An Eerie Tale

Ho-lee hell. What in the world did I just watch during this year’s E3 Nintendo Direct? Per usual, Nintendo was kind of on fire here with their trailers. If you’re a Nintendo fan, it was basically a gold mine. We got Zelda: Link’s Awakening, The Cadence of Hyrule, Luigi’s Mansion, Pokemon Sword and ShieldAnimal Crossing, Dragon Quest, The Witcher III, a whole host of third-party titles, and a couple of high-profile Smash Bros. character reveals. But, if I’m being honest, all of that was pretty much expected.

What I did not expect was that trailer at the end. The very last thing they showed before turning things over to the Nintendo Treehouse was an oddly-dark cinematic trailer. We saw some glowing runes spiraling inside of a dark cave. Then, we saw Zelda and Link exploring underneath the cavernous depths. We get some flashes of random happenings.

This all played to some odd music that seemed to play in reverse. We see the skeleton of some evil-looking dude (not Ganon, right?), along with the white hand of something else. Cut to Hyrule Castle, and we see an explosion underneath. They cut to black, and it is confirmed that they are working on a sequel to Breath of the Wild.

Sadly, there were no gameplay details for this game, nor a title, but man, did it look sick. As a fan of Majora’s Mask, I got a very similar vibe here — really eerie and unexpectedly morbid. I have so many questions here regarding the gameplay, but is this cinematic hinting at Zelda being involved in the story? Will gamers get to finally play as her?

We shall see!
