Luke Wilson Joins DC Universe’s Stargirl

DC Universe’s Stargirl has already added quite the line up of classic DC Comics’ superheroes. We know that the lead role of Courtney Whitmore will be played by Brec Bassinger of Nickelodean’s Bella & the Bulldogs. Joining her will be Lou Ferrigno Jr. as Rex Tyler aka Hourman, Brian Stapf as Ted Grant aka Wildcat, Henry Thomas as Charles McNider aka Dr. Mid-Nite and Anjelika Washington in an unknown role. But it looks like they are not done casting heroes yet.

According to Deadline, the star of Old School, Legally Blonde and The Royal Tenebaums, Luke Wilson, has joined the cast of Stargirl to play the mechanic turned superhero Pat Dugan, who created Stripe a bulky fifteen foot robot that he created. This Golden Age character was created by the creator of Superman Jerry Siegel along with artist Hal Sherman in DC Comics’ Star Spangled Comics in 1941.

Here is the show’s official description of Pat Dugan:
“Pat Dugan once went by the less-than-inspired superhero name of Stripesy, sidekick to a young hero known as the Star-Spangled-Kid and later Starman of the legendary Justice Society of America. Today, Pat has left his sidekick life behind him. But when his new step-daughter, Courtney Whitmore, discovers Pat’s secret past and takes on Starman’s legacy to become Stargirl, Pat is forced to come out of retirement and once again become a sidekick — to his step-daughter — this time piloting a 15-foot robot called Stripe.”

Creator, Showrunner and executive producer for Stargirl Geoff Johns, talked about how much of a fan he is of Wilson, so much so that he says that he had written this part specifically for him so many years ago. “When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and saw Bottle Rocket, I became a huge fan and admirer of Luke’s,” Johns said “And I literally wrote this part for Luke, hoping that someday and somehow he’d play Pat Dugan. I onlyenvisioned him. And now I feel like I won the lottery! Luke’s talent, humor, compassion — his presence and professionalism — and his creative collaboration, his ideas — we’re so lucky to have him alongside Brec in Stargirl.”

Wilson has a lot of films coming up including The Goldfinch, Guest of Hounour, Berlin, I Love You and In the Swing of Things. He is represented by CAA. Along with Johns, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Melissa Carter are serving as executive producers for Stargirl. It’s being produced by Berlanti Productions and Mad Ghost Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
