Michael Shannon Finally Gives His Opinion About Controversial Man Of Steel Ending

My good friend Jace of The Comic Source and I have had quite the debates about Zack Snyder’s 2013 Man Of Steel. This film kicked off the DCEU and has lead to… well… confusion. This film told the story of the rise of Clark Kent aka Kal-El aka Superman, played by Henry Cavill. Many Superman fans did not like Snyder’s dark approach to the character. They claimed that he was lacking one of his most outstanding qualities, Hope.

The most controversial part of the film was the ending. This is the scene where Cavill’s Superman kills Michael Shannon’s, General Zod. The act of killing Zod devastated Kal-El. But it was the only way to ensure the safety of the trapped bystanders as well as planet Earth. Superman fans were very disappointed as they felt that their Man of Steel should never kill no matter what. If he is the hero that they believe he is, then he would have found a different way.

Man of Steel was released seven years ago. In that time Shannon hasn’t given his opinion about that controversial ending. This past week, he joined the ReelBlend podcast via Cinemablend to talk about his upcoming film The Quarry. During the interview he was asked if he thought that his character’s death was unnecessary.

“No, I didn’t think there was any other way to end, it, really. I mean, Zod says it’s either me or you. I’m not gonna let you survive. I will kill you, unless you kill me. And that seemed sufficiently Greek to me, you know?” Said Shannon.

No doubt that Snyder was using Greek mythology when he was putting together his version of the DC Universe. But the tone that worked for him in films like 300 and Watchmen, didn’t resonate with many in a Superman film. I am a Batman fan so I prefer a darker tone. I thought that that experience was something that was going to turn Clark into the hero that he was supposed to be. Snyder’s road for him was just darker.

What do you think about the ending for Man of Steel? Necessary or not?
