Michel Franco Talks About His Impactful Award-Winning Film New Order [Exclusive Interview]

One of the scariest things in society is the idea of normalizing corruption. Normalizing seeing people struggle and demand for rights only to be ignored. While all this is happening, you just go about your day and just ignore the noise. So if no one is really paying attention, what will it take to make a change? It is situations like this that have inspired the Neon Rated film, New Order.

This film takes place in a near-future dystopian Mexico. It is written and directed by Michel Franco. This film debuted at the 77th Venice Film Festival last year and earned the top Silver Grand Jury Prize. It’s a very impactful film as Franco pulls no punches in showing audiences the horrors that could take place if things continue to get worse. Watch as an angry country takes to the streets to demand better, while high society continues to party and go on with their lives. Only to have their worlds collide and end up with the government taking control. New Order is a film that can spark heavy conversations.

New Order

Here is the synopsis for New Order:

Conceived Six Years Ago, Michel Franco’s near-future dystopia feels ripped from headlines that haven’t yet been written. While Protests rage in the streets, Marianne’s high society family prepares for her wedding. At first, only splatters of green paint and the appearance of Rolando,a former employee seeking emergency medical funds, intrude on the festivities. But soon the party is unable to keep the reckoning at bay, and what follows is a swift disintegration of law and order defined first by class lines, then by disastrous government recapitulation.

With it’s release today in theaters, LRM Online’s Emmanuel Gomez spoke with Michel Franco about the film. We talk about his inspiration behind New Order. Also, we talk about the necessary impactful moments in the film that need to be turned up as a result of a desensitized society. It’s a great conversation that you can check out down below!
