Misbehaviour is the primary way to spark change.

Pageantry culture has slowly been changing in the past fifty years. With women and equal rights, pageantry changed significantly by allowing more minorities in the competition while decreasing the sexist traditions of the past.

All these types of structural movements had to start somewhere.

Based on a true story, two very different groups of women made their voices heard in the fight for equality.

The cast includes Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jessie Buckley, Keeley Hawes, Phyllis Logan, Lesley Manville, Rhys Ifans, and Greg Kinnear. Philippa Lowthorpe directed the movie.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In 1970, the Miss World competition took place in London, hosted by US comedy legend, Bob Hope. At the time, Miss World was the most-watched TV show on the planet with over 100 million viewers. Claiming that beauty competitions demeaned women, the newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement achieved overnight fame by invading the stage and disrupting the live broadcast of the competition.

Not only that, when the show resumed, the result caused uproar: the winner was not the Swedish favorite, but with Miss Grenada. She became the first black woman to be crowned Miss World. In matter of hours, a global audience had witnessed the patriarchy driven from the stage and the Western ideal beauty turned on its head.

Misbehaviour is in select theaters and VOD on September 25.
